Using a barrel that had ATF in it to haul fuel to tank

I have gotten a free 55 gallon barrel that had ATF in it and I use off road diesel for my furnace and I want to use the barrel to haul it. Do I need to clean it out or can I just put the diesel in and use it? There isn't much left of ATF in the barrel
