Hi,
I just had a Carrier Performance 15 2-ton Heat Pump (25hcc5) and a Carrier Performance Fan Coil FV4 (FV4CNF002) with 10 KW heat strips installed. I have a concern with the aluminum wiring (existing) from the electrical panel and how it is connected. I have reached out to the installer, a Carrier Factory Authorized and Presidents Award Dealer, about my concern but would like opinions so I am better informed.
The wire coming to the unit is definitely aluminum and I believe 4 gauge. I am having a hard time decoding the markings but this is what I get: CONALCO-9 Type SE Cable Style U Type XHHW CDRS 300 Volts to Ground 3 CDRS 4 AL UL. The installer terminated this cable directly to the 60 amp breaker on the air handler (used DEOX). I looked at the wiring diagram and it states to use copper cable only.
I believe the aluminum cable in itself is ok, but they should have terminated it to a disconnect and then used copper wire from the disconnect to the air handler.
Does this sound correct? What sort of disconnect box should they use (CO/ALR or CU/AL)? What gauge copper wire?
The Heater Amps are: 36.2/40
The Min Ampacity is: 53.8/58.5
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
