Attic Ladder needs new hinge or reinforcement of some kind

Hi, my wooden attic ladder has developed a crack in side rail causing it to be unstable. I tried flexible metal strapping to hold rail together but it is unsatisfactory(far sections in picture). Any ideas on different hinge or reinforcement to add where the 2 sections meet? Thanks for your help!
